6 World V I D E O A G E October 2021 two-thirds of that via digital platforms, nearly double the coverage from 2012’s London Games. As an aside feature, for Tokyo 2020, in addition to the Opening and Closing Cere- monies, OBS and NHK (Japan’s public broadcaster) offered 8K SHV live coverage of selected sessions of athletics, including badminton, football (soccer), judo, swimming, table tennis, and volleyball. OBS starts preparing for the Games anywhere up to six years out by checking the venues. Three years out there’s the world broadcasters briefing, a year later another world broadcaster meeting, and with a year to go, yet another broadcaster meeting to fine- tune everything. Six months before the Games begin, the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) is established and three months out all technical in- stallations start at each of the venues. One day before the Games start everyone goes through a dress rehearsal, si- mulating a competition day from start to finish. Ultimately, however, the cost of putting on the Olympics and Paralympics resulted in a huge financial loss for Japan of 2.4 trillion yen (about U.S. $22 billion). Between 3,800 and 4,000 hours of that was actual sports and ceremonies, while the rest was interviews and features.
