June/July 2023 Event Planner 22 Goodbye to the Big Boeing Flying Jumbo The Boeing 747 has finally had its wings clipped. After 53 years, the baleen whale of the sky, the world’s first “jumbo jet,” is no longer in production. The 1,574th — and final — unit was delivered in January 2022 to Atlas Air, a U.S. cargo airline. The distinctive double-decker could seat 400 passengers in three classes. In 1991, a record-breaking 1,087 passengers were flown in a 747 that airlifted Ethiopian Jews to Israel. The 747’s first trip was a Pan Am flight between New York City and London on January 22, 1970. In May of that same year, Pan Am began flying 747s directly to London from Los Angeles’ LAX.
