For this reason, many non-U.S. airlines call the U.S. their second “home market,” and are using their more favorable awards programs to entice American travellers to fly with them. For example, a flight from New York City to Paris might require 20,000 miles for an economy seat on a non-U.S. airline flight, and 40,000 miles for the same seat on a U.S.- based airline. The reason for this is that fees that banks charge merchants when clients pay with a credit card are higher in the U.S. than in other countries. Credit card fees mostly finance rewards tickets, so the rewards tend to be more lucrative in the U.S., and non-U.S. airlines are tapping into that. In the U.S., credit cards deliver three miles (4.8 km.) per dollar, while cardholders in Europe get just one mile (1.6 km.) per every two euros (U.S. $2.17) charged.
