14 V I D E O A G E December 2021 Event Planner The High Cost Of Train Travel In The U.S. T rain travel is very expen- sive in the U.S. for lack of competition and because Amtrak, the national provider of passenger rail service, receives very little funding from the fed- eral government. Furthermore, Amtrak only owns about 1,000 kilometers of its own track, with the remainder owned by freight carriers. The main reason for high ticket prices is because Amtrak pays an annual fee of around $140 million for trackage rights, which works out to roughly $5 per 1.6 kilometers traveled. For example, Amtrak’s one- way coach fare for the 330-kilo- meter ride from New York City to Washington, D.C. varies from (a rare) $49 to $196, compared to a fixed $154 for airplane travel on the same route, and $34 for the most expensive bus ride. In terms of time, the train takes three and a half hours, while the bus takes four hours.
