And the situation is expected to get even worse this year. In the first five months of 2023, the number of complaints totaled 38,135 (a 68 percent increase from the same period in 2022) before they stopped counting. Travelers in 2024 are expecting a 10 percent reduction in the number of air-traffic controllers. The U.S. airlines’ safety authority, the FAA, is expected to have staffing challenges. Old equipment is not being replaced for economic reasons by airports, and aircraft shortages are expected to lead to a slowdown in deliveries. There will also be a shortage of pilots.
