Last fall’s market saw over 13,800 participants in attendance, with 4,800 buyers from across 110 countries. Zanzibar’s First DISCOP I Last July 11-13, Basic Lead successfully launched DIS- COP Zanzibar in Tanzania, its first annual East African TV market, according to Bruce Rabinowitz, who attended the event on behalf of Discovery Learning Alliance. The venue is further than most locations in Africa from the U.S, as Zanzibar is an island off the coast of Tanzania, in the Indian Ocean. The market, which was concurrent with the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), attracted some 600 participants, including more than 60 buyers. Participants had to fly through either Nairobi, Kenya, or Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, and then take a short flight to Zanzibar, where they then headed to Hotel Verde, the market’s venue, which had just opened. ZIFF allowed DISCOP participants to take part in their events, including premieres, panels, and exhibits. This first edition of DISCOP Zanzibar featured 24 booths occupied by companies coming from various countries, with attendees hailing from Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana in Africa, as well as from Europe. There were also seven participants from the U.S. Although it attracted buyers and sellers from throughout the African continent and the world, DISCOP Zanzibar had a unique emphasis on the countries of East Africa, which is clearly evolving into an area of importance to the industry.
