14 September 2018 Event Planner & Travel News Making Airlines Pay For Delays The European Union’s Flight Compensation Regulation EC 261/2004 entitles passengers to compensation — up to as much as 600 euro cash — from an airline in the event of a cancellation, a boarding denial, or a delay that lasts more than three hours (but the rule does not apply to disruptions outside the airline’s control). Any airline taking off from an E.U. country is subject to this rule. In the U.S., no laws entitle passengers to similar compensation. However, in the E.U., 63 percent of passengers surveyed were not aware of their rights, 47 percent did not think they were eligible for compensation, and 42 percent were unaware as to how to file a claim. Travel management com- panies can manage the com- pensation process for their clients, and some companies’ policies specifically state that employees should give the compensation back to their employers because they were the ones who paid for the tickets. The E.U. regulation, however, entitles only the passenger to compensation.
