Airlines could let passengers bring other pets in board, but hefty fees would apply. Airlines imposed restrictions in response to passengers who’ve brought pigs, turkeys, snakes, and other unusual pets onboard as service or emotional support animals in order to avoid paying pet fees, which are generally U.S.$100-200 per trip. Charles Hobart, a United Airlines spokesman estimated that the airline carries roughly 160,000 pets and nearly 200,000 service and emotional support animals every year. And now, because of the pandemic, most airlines have tightened their pet regulations even further, with some of the larger carriers suspending all international pet travel, only allowing pets in the cabin as carry-ons or prohibiting animals on flights requiring connections.
