Videoage International October 2019

In just a few years, Turkish content has con- quered Latin America with its television series and outclassed the Latin American presence in Budapest, which has decreased from 15 exhibitors to three. Similarly, NBI saw only four exhibiting companies from Italy: Mediaset, RAI, Mondo TV and Film Export, and, as with LA- TAM exhibitors, they went without the visibi- lity comparable to that of Turkey. In total, the Budapest fair hosted 135 exhibi- tors from 29 countries, making it much smal- ler than the event that NATPE (the Los Ange- les-based association of international producers) organizes in Miami, Flo- rida, in January. All in all, the Hungarian fair attracted 525 buyers of various rights, in- cluding those for the Internet. But compared to previous editions — before the fair moved from the Sofitel hotel to the current InterCon- tinental — recent NATPE Bu- dapest events have lacked ex- travagances such as parties on boats or at fashion venues. Even the few pavilions (many exhibi- tors operate from hotel suites) looked modest. To revitalize the Italian pre- sence, the idea circulated that for next NATPE Budapest the Italian exhibitors should gather in a “Piazza Italia” (now they are scattered on different floors and areasoftheexhibitionvenue)and attract buyers with refreshments and typical Italian products, thus recreating, with little expense, the dynamism of the past and giving Italy the visibility it is now lacking. Despite the low costs of the initiative, Italian content exporters still need financial help, even if not at the Turkish level, to compete on equal terms with other exhibitors. This support could come from the Institute for Foreign Trade (now called ITA), which, among other things, is very active in Budapest andwhich in the past has already successfully organized pavilions for producers and distributors of Italian audiovisual content.
