52 Event Planner & Travel News October 2018 V I D E O A G E U.S. Regulator Wants Airline Seats Smaller The FAA — the U.S. airline regulator — is now regulating travelers and deregulating airlines. Thecurrentfederaladministration in the U.S. has — much more so than past administrations — allowed the FAA to go against the interests and safety of travelers. The latest FAA salvo is to allow airlines to keep reducing seat size, which in addition to being harmful, can be dangerous during emergencies and evacuations. Over the years, seat pitch (or the distancebetweenseats)shrankfrom 89 centimeters to 71 centimeters and seat width decreased from 47 centimeters to 43 centimeters. (And all of this is being done at a time when the overweight rate in the U.S. is 70 percent and obesity has reached 38 percent.) The FAA, however, maintains that smaller seats are fine and that they do not represent a problem during emergent situations. The FAA went so overboard that some airlines are even refusing to follow through with the agency’s recommendations. American Airlines, for example, retreated from its original FAA- approved plans to reduce seat size.
