Airfares Go Up The drop in fuel prices is lowering airfares, and airlines are making smaller profits (proof that the fuel surcharge went into their pockets and not to actually buy oil), so the airlines are cutting capacity in order to create shortage, which in turn will increase airfares. Delta, for example, is trimming international capacity by three percent with the largest cuts in service (15 to 20 percent) to Japan, Africa, India, the Middle East and Brazil. This strategywill expand “margins and profitability,” according to Delta’s CEO Richard Anderson. Delta’s president, Ed Bastian, acknowledged that the company enjoyed 50 percent of the benefits from lower fuel costs.
