Yet, the Department of Transportation has no plans to regulate the industry into technical resiliency. Technical failures have struck all of the largest U.S. airlines at least once in the last two years. Last August, a power outage at Delta grounded for one day 2,660 flights out of the 6,000 scheduled to fly, and the network equipment didn’t switch over to its backup systems. The meltdown raises questions about whether the wave of U.S. airline mergers that created four large carriers controlling 85 percent of U.S. capacity has built companies too large and too reliant on IT systems that date back to the 1990s. Delta’s problems come on the heels of a computer glitch at Southwest Airlines, which caused the cancellation of 2,300 flights over four days.
