L.A. Screenings 2018 O ut of more than 110 pilots, a whopping 22 are based on other projects — including spinoffs of current hits and remakes of beloved favorites, as well as American versions of international format. The 2018-2019 TV season could very well become known as the year of the reboot. Some of the most highly anticipated of these include new versions of Cagney and Lacey , Magnum P.I. , and Charmed , as well as a Murphy Brown revival that features most of the original show’s cast. Here’s what else is on offer this year*: CBS STUDIOS INTERNATIONAL Comedy Fam (CBS) A woman’s half-sister comes to live with her and her fiancé in order to escape their father. Kidding (Showtime) (series order) Jim Carrey headlines as Jeff, who once starred as Mr. Pickles, an icon of children’s television. When his real-life family begins to implode, he has no one to turn to and no way to cope. Pandas in New York (CBS) A family of Indian doctors in New York City plot to arrange their youngest son’s life, not realizing that he’s already made plans of his own. Untitled Earl/McAuliffe Project (CBS) The lives of a young married couple are upended when a young pop star moves into their spare bedroom. Welcome to the Neighborhood (CBS) When the nicest guy in the Midwest moves to a tough neighborhood in L.A., he finds that not everyone appreciates his neighborliness. Drama $1 (CBS All Access) (series order) Tells the tale of a one-dollar bill that changes hands among a group of people who find themselves entangled in multiple murders. A Million Little Things (ABC) A dramedy about a group of friends who all feel stuck in their lives. When one of them dies suddenly, they all must learn to start living. Blood & Treasure (CBS) (summer 2019) Serialized action-adventure series about an antiquities expert and an art thief who join forces to catch a terrorist. Charmed (CW) A reboot of the original series about three sisters in a college town who learn that they are witches. City on a Hill (Showtime) Set in Boston in the early 1990s, when the city was rife with corruption and violence, this series is a fictional account of the “Boston Miracle.” The Code (CBS) The crème de la crème of the military take on some of the country’s biggest challenges — both in and out of the courtroom. Escape at Dannemora (Showtime) (series order) Tells the true story of a prison break in upstate New York in 2015. F.B.I. (CBS) (series order) Revolves around the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In The Dark (CW) After a blind woman “witnesses” the murder of a friend, and the police dismiss her story, she sets out with her dog, Pretzel, to find the killer. L.A. Confidential (CBS) Three homicide detectives, a female reporter, and an actress cross paths as the detectives chase a serial killer in 1950s Los Angeles. Main Justice (CBS) Goes behind the scenes at the Department of Justice as the U.S. Attorney General takes on the biggest legal cases in the country. Playing Dead (CW) A dramedy about a mortician and his son whose world is upended when the woman who abandoned them 15 years ago returns suddenly and asks them to help her fake her death. Skinny Dip (CW) After her husband tries to kill her, a woman teams up with an ex-cop to exact her revenge. Strange Angel (CBS All Access) (series order) Set in the 1930s, the series tells the true tale of a man working in the field of rocket science, who is also part of a new occult religion in which he performs sex magic rituals. Tell Me a Story (CBS All Access) (series order) Based on a Spanish format, this psychological thriller takes the world’s most beloved fairy tales and reimagines them. The Twilight Zone (CBS All Access) (series order) An update of the original sci-fi series that aired from 1959 to 1964. Your Honor (Showtime) (series order) Based on an Israeli format, this series centers on the son of a judge who is involved in a hit and run. DISNEY MEDIA DISTRIBUTION Comedy Better Together (formerly Steps ) (ABC) Based on the Swedish format, Bonus Family , this series follows four adults in three houses as they raise three kids after two divorces. The Bluffs (formerly Untitled Justin Noble Project ) (ABC) Based on the book and blog, How May We Hate You, this workplace comedy centers on guest service associates at a high-end resort. Bright Futures (NBC) Focuses on a group of pals as they transition from immature twentysomethings to successful professionals. The Kids Are Alright (formerly Untitled Tim Doyle Project ) (ABC) Set in the 1970s, this single-camera comedy tells the tale of an Irish-Catholic family with eight sons. Man of the House (ABC) Two recently divorced sisters decide to move in together. The oldest kid — and only son — is now completely surrounded by women. Relatively Wonderful (formerly Untitled Bobby Bowman Project ) (ABC) Revolves around a dysfunctional family that still manages to find happiness. Southern Hospitality (formerly Three Rivers ) (ABC) Rebecca left her family’s Texas ranch long ago to work at an upscale hotel in New York. But she agrees to return after her dad promises to turn the ranch into a destination spot. Drama False Profits (ABC) Revolves around a team of women in suburban Arizona as they struggle to reach the top in the dog-eat-dog world of a cosmetics business. The Finest (formerly Untitled Holmes Project ) (ABC) Follows five African-American sisters — all NYPD officers — as they juggle their jobs with the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood. The Fix (ABC) After losing the biggest case of her career, a former prosecutor left L.A. for a quiet life in Oregon. But when a killer strikes again, she is forced to return to her old stomping grounds in L.A. For Love (ABC) Five years after her fiancé was tragically killed, Hope gets a phone call from him. And so begins an epic love triangle set against a secret world of magic in present-day New Orleans. Grand Hotel (ABC) Based on a Spanish format, this upstairs/ downstairs drama centers on a hotel-owner, his second wife, and their adult children. The Mission (ABC) When a San Francisco police captain is arrested for corruption, the cops under his command must learn to navigate the streets without him. Salvage (ABC) Focuses on ex-cop Jimmy Hill, who moves back home to rural Florida. When a murder is linked to the sunken treasure of a lost Spanish galleon, he finds himself sucked into the investigation. Staties (ABC) NYPD detective Eliza Cortez has been banished to the boonies of Oregon after a high-profile error in this fish-out-of-water police procedural. Take Two (ABC) (series order) Ella is the onetime star of a hit cop show who’s fresh out of rehab. Desperate to jumpstart her stalled career, she manages to convince Eddie, a real-life private eye, to let her shadow him. ENTERTAINMENT ONE Drama The Rookie (ABC) (series order) Focuses on John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the LAPD. MGM TELEVISION Drama Cagney and Lacey (CBS) A reboot of the beloved series about two female detectives in L.A. MIRAMAX TELEVISION Drama Untitled Robert Levine Project (FOX) A pair of private eyes right wrongs in working- class Boston. NBCUNIVERSAL INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION Comedy Abby’s (NBC) About an unlicensed San Diego bar with a unique set of rules. I Feel Bad (formerly Untitled Aseem Batra Project ) (NBC) Tells the tale of one woman trying to have it all. Like Family (NBC) Aubrey and Artie bonded like siblings in foster care, but things get complicated in adulthood. So Close (NBC) Hopeless romantics Riley and Kyle are unaware that they live only blocks apart and may be soul mates. Drama The Enemy Within (NBC) A former CIA agent and infamous traitor is released from prison to help stop some of the most dangerous people threatening the U.S. today. Get Christie Love (ABC) Based on a TV movie and series that aired in the 1970s, this show centers on an African-American CIA agent who leads an elite ops unit. The InBetween (NBC) A mysterious clairvoyant woman helps an LAPD detective and a damaged ex-FBI agent solve cases. Magnum P.I. (CBS) A reboot of the iconic series about an ex-Navy SEAL who becomes a private investigator.
