Videoage International March 2018
14 March 2018 Road To MIP-TV Screenings (April 9-11), the pre- L.A. Screenings Showcase (date to be announced), Fresh TV Screenings (April 10-11), Best of Short Form Series Screenings (April 11), and Best of CanneSeries Screenings (April 11-12). This is in addition to the first edition of the CanneSeries, which will run from April 4 to 11, with an “international competition” that will take place from Saturday, April 7 to Wednesday, April 11. Open to the public and organized by an association independent from MIP-TV — led by its president Fleur Pellerin (pictured at right), a South Korea-born former French Minister of Culture and Communications — the CanneSeries will aim to celebrate excellence. The official competition will present 10 world premieres in the Auditorium Lumière in the Palais des Festivals. The selection will be made up of innovative series from around the world — from every genre, in every format, in every distribution form, no selection quotas applied. Alongside the official competition, three series will be presented as part of theOut of Competition Screenings. Highlighting new high-profile series, the screenings will open CanneSeries on April 4 with the world premiere of the third season of Versailles. The international competition will open with the out of competition screening and world premiere of The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, based on the bestselling European novel by Joël Dicker, starring Golden Globe- and Emmy Award-nominated actor Patrick Dempsey ( Grey’s Anatomy ) and directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud (Academy Award-winning film Black And White In Color ). An international jury will screen the selection and present the CanneSeries awards at the Gala Awards Ceremony on April 11, which will be broadcast live on Canal+. Attached to the CanneSeries, is “In Development,” a two-day creative forum starting on April 10 that’s dedicated to drama series production. The event has already received 344 projects by producers from 46 countries. In Development is a co-venture between MIP- TV and the City of Cannes to select 12 projects to be presented to potential development partners. At the pre-L.A. Screenings Showcase, Hollywood studios will give a sneak peek of the new shows set to bow ahead of this year’s Los Angeles Screenings in May. VideoAge ’s Activity Picks at MIP-TV Our picks start pre-MIP-TV on April 7 with Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon, who will share her insight as part of a keynote conversationwith KLOK’s Gary Carter for MIPFormats. Mahon will discuss her development strategy for unscripted formats on Channel 4 and where the industry is heading. Mahon will also be the recipient of the International Formats Gold Award at a gala dinner following the event. On Sunday, April 8, Kate Phillips, controller of Entertainment Commissioning at BBC, will present a keynote address on the future of formats. Phillips will elaborate on her extensive experience in the industry, from commissioning over 500 hours of programming a year to serving as co-owner and director of the TV formats company Mast Media. Still on Sunday, the invite-onlyMIPDrama Buyers’ Summit, which includes the MIPDrama Buyers’ Lunch, will offer an exclusive first-look showcase of six previously unseen drama series. The Drama Co- Production Lunch will take place on the following day, April 9, which is also the market’s opening day. Then, on Tuesday, April 10, VideoAge would recommend to follow the discussions on changes with “The Changing Form of Financing” and “How AR Will Affect the Content Industry,” which will weigh the benefits and drawbacks of using augmented reality in the content industry. Cottonwood Media’s Find Me in Paris has been chosen for the Kids’ World Premiere Screening that Tuesday as well. The dance-themed drama series tells the story of a young girl attending the Paris Opera Ballet School in 1905, who accidentally time travels into the future. Find Me in Paris has been pre- sold to NBC Universal Kids and Hulu for the U.S, ABC for Australia, VRT for Belgium, Disney Channel for France and Italy, and France Télévisions. The first edition of the Kids’ Live Action Pitch also takes place on April 10. Five pre-selected finalists present original live-action projects for the kids’ market. Wednesday, April 11, is also promising with the “Medailles d’Honneur Lunch,” and the “CanneSeries Closing Ceremony,” after which Netflix’s new series, Safe, will have its world premiere screening. Throughout the week, the Nigerian International TV Summit will be promoting their event, which will start in Paris just after MIP-TV. CanneSeries adds a further level of glamour and discovery of these series both for industry experts and the general public. When you take the vast array of new programming across all genres, the various screenings offered by CanneSeries, MIPDoc and the MIPDrama Buyers’ Summit, the exciting Médailles d’Honneur celebration of great industry leaders, the expanded Junior@MIPTV program with the International Emmy® Kids Awards, and the range of breath-taking new VR, AR, 4K or 8K technology, you begin to see why we believe MIP-TV 2018 will be an exceptional event. VAI: Finally, how many exhibitors do you expect? LG: We expect over 1,450 exhibiting companies, including over 60 new exhibitors. In conclusion, VideoAge can report that, with 3,800 buyers and 1,450 exhibiting sales companies, MIP-TV offers a buyer-to-seller ratio of about 3:1 (5:1 is considered the highest level for the TV sector).
