Video Age International June/July 2016

4 A fter seven years in Turin, RAI’s Prix Italia (radio- TV andWeb festival)will return to its itinerant nature for just its 68th edition and move to Lampedusa September 30-October 2, 2016. But the Prix is expected to return to Turin in 2017. This move is meant to create awareness of the migrant crisis. On October 3, the Italian Government has declared a National Day in Remembrance of Victims of Immigration. Lampedusa is the entry port for most immigrants arriving from Africa over dangerous waters. The event in Lampedusa will be three days long, instead of the traditional six. This means that most of the voting by the juries will be cast online beforehand. As for the venue, the most accommodating site is the airport, which has conference rooms and is near the main town center. The hotels on the island are small, with the largest hotels topping out at 40 rooms each. This unusual Prix Italia will be the first for Vittorio Argento, the newly appointed secretary general, who replaced Paolo Morawski. Lampedusa is the largest of the three small islands in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. The island has 6,000 residents, is 12 km long and three km wide and is closer to Africa (113 Km) than to Italy (205 km). Regular scheduled flights are to and from Palermo and Catania and, in the summer, to and from other Italian destinations connecting from a total of 11 Italian cities. Seven airlines serve Lampedusa, including Alitalia, Meridiana and Vueling.
