Airlines and hotels are better than us at it, and we usually take our best shot and make the buy. Both have a finite number of spots, and both have competitors, but of the two, hotels are considered a notch below airlines when it comes to greediness. Hotel rates fluctuate a lot — not hourly like with airlines — but daily, and they can swing as much as 50 percent. It’s called Dynamic Pricing and it uses an algorithm that predicts demand and forecasts when clients would make a buy at a higher price. When facing high hotel costs, the best solution, experts say, is not to buy immediately, but to wait a day or so. Hotels use the Average Daily Rate x occupancy metric to determine their prices to fill rooms along the relative supply and demand curve of each given night/season.
